Sunday Chit Chat

We took the kids to see WALL-E yesterday, see my WALL-E review on Sci Fi Jungle.  I was very proud of the boys for making it all the way through the movie in the theater for the first time.

WALLE-E

I was awarded a 10 year clock at work in Friday, and the promptly had a terrible day with all sorts of things breaking!  It was a mess and is still not fixed so I am going in to the office in a few minutes to try a few more things and then Monday I will have all the fun of calling Microsoft for support.  I always say that my job is wonderful 364 days of the year and terrible for the one other day, so there you go.

I also have to run over to Bed Bath and Beyond and get some Keurig K-Packs for my coffee maker and check out any bathroom fixtures I might be in the market for.

I finished my mock crochet cap.  It is a pretty darn funny looking hat on me - I wonder if it might look good on someone else like someone that doesn't have froufy curly hair and a big head.  (boy, I sound really sexy and hot don't I)

I am going to find a good model for the cap and get a picture of it.  It has a ruffled edge and it is kind of cute in theory, it just doesn't look good on me.  I have to find the right person to adopt it.  My next work of art - a shopping bag.  We shall see how this comes out.

Draft is Done

I finished the draft of the Mock Cable Dishcloth pattern and emailed it to Stephanie so she can check it out for me. If its any good they might use it for the looming dishclothes loom a long at Ravelry in September.

I am not going to post any pictures to keep it secret in case they want to use it for the group. I think it would be more fun for the group to do a new fresh pattern instead of one that’s already been posted.

43 Things - Web 2.0 Goal Setting site

I have run across a really interesting website called 43 things.  Its a combination of a goal setting website, online to do list, cheering section, with social networking and tagging thrown in.

I have a small list made up - HERE.  It was interesting to see that when I added the goal of "Live in the moment" I was joining a group of 1,611 other people with that exact same goal.  Wow.

Obama Presidential Seal - “vero possumus”

Obama's new campaign logo looks like the Presidential Seal and says “vero possumus” on it. (Which Madame Boure my 9th grade Latin and French teacher would tell me means "Yes, We Can" in Latin.)

I am pretty sure that most of the rednecks rural mountain dwelling Americans down here in Georgia are going to think that it is talkin' about the little beady eyed animals you are likely to run over on the road.  Oh well...

240px-Brushtail_possum I understand that he is trying to look "presidential" but really its a bit much in my opinion.  This is going to be a long election year.  My hubby and I have very different opinions on Obama, and I am really trying to keep my open mind at this point, although I am still very excited by Obama's speech giving skills.  The good news is that no matter which of the jokesters running wins the election it will mean THE END OF THE BUSH PRESIDENCY which is cause for celebration!  That man is a menace to the reputation of America and the meaning of Freedom.  But lest I start in on a anti-Bush rant and annoy the heck out of all my Conservative readers.  Oh wait, you'all are pissed off at shrub too at this point.  Never mind.  We are all in agreement -- bring on someone else.  ANYONE else.  McCain, Obama, either one is looking pretty darn good to me.  Even a Possum would be better than that rat in there right now.

I am Marianne of Marianne's Motifs and I authorize.net, that is to say, authorized this blog post because I am a crazy New York Liberal living in Georgia.

Thursday Update

Tuesday was my birthday and I spent it nursing a nasty case of Strep throat.  They asked if I wanted to take 10 days of penicillin pills or get 1 penicillin shot.  With the way antibiotics mess up my stomach I chose the shot.  I am not sure I took the good choice - that shot in the butt HURT.  My butt still hurts.  LOL!

I sold 3 books on half.com today.  If you are interested here is a link to my listing of books - My Half.com Store

I finally finished the Preschool yearbook layouts.  I sent off to Clark Color labs to have 575 prints made for 8 cents each.  I also got free shipping.  That was about the cheapest I could find.  That's a lot of prints!  Now when they get delivered I will bring them and the bind-it-all to the school and show the teachers how to bind them up into flip books. I need some help at this point and I am going to delegate the last part of the job.  Making 25 4x6 layouts took a lot of work let me tell you.

Super Foods - Super Fast - Super Cheap

Here is a Quick and Easy dinner recipe that contains 3 out of 10 of Oprah / Dr Perricone's touted "Superfoods"  These are 10 of a larger number of healthy foods that they recommend due to such things as  high levels of antioxidants and other healthy properties.  Instead of trying to buy your Superfoods in a pill like lipovox let's try cooking them up the old fashioned way.

This Red Lentil and Vegetable Stew recipe contains lentils, onion & garlic, and red pepper sauce, three of the 10 super foods.  It also has the additional benefits of being quick to cook, and cheap to make.  Red lentils, unlike their green cousins, cook in about 30 minutes.  They get very soft which is also great for me because I can't eat too much high fiber (due to the IBD.)  It also happens to taste really good.

This recipe is also very flexible - you can add or leave out various veggies to your liking.  The carrots, celery garlic and onions are the base and you can go from there.  If you don't have Vegetable or Chicken stock just use water, that's fine.  You can also add white wine, sherry, or even a little apple juice or cider vintager to the liquid. Definitely double the recipe and make a big pot.  This freezes well.

Serve this with a green salad and some fresh baked bread and butter and its a feast.

Red Lentil and Vegetable Stew from RecipeZaar
Recipe #82568 | 40 min | 10 min prep
By: Jim Cortina

Wonderful stew, can be a vegetarian meal on its own. Or you can add some diced or shredded smoked duck, if you like meat. The red lentils break down, and cause this to be like a really rich soup. If you need to stretch this out, you can serve it over white rice, to do a sort of "beans and rice" thing.

SERVES 2 -3 (change servings and units)
Change to: Servings US Metric Close

Ingredients

    * 1 cup red lentil
    * 1 carrot, finely diced
    * 1 stalk celery, finely diced
    * 1/2 medium onion, finely diced
    * 2 garlic cloves, minced
    * 2 cups vegetable stock or chicken stock
    * 4 teaspoons ground cumin
    * 3-4 dashes Tabasco chipotle pepper sauce (optional)
    * 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
    * 14 ounces canned diced tomatoes (do not drain liquid)

Directions

   1. Sauté the carrots, onion, and celery in the olive oil until they start to caramelize a bit.

   2. Add the garlic about a minute before the vegetables are finished sautéing.

   3. Add the red lentils, and stir until mixed with the vegetables.

   4. Add the stock, tomatoes and juice, cumin, and Tabasco, if using.

   5. Bring to a simmer over medium heat and reduce heat to medium low.

   6. Simmer until the lentils are tender, about 25 minutes.

   7. If the liquid all evaporates and the lentils are not done, add a little water to keep the simmer going.

Got HDMI Overload?

Here's just what the Dad that literally has everything (and not enough HDMI jacks to plug that everything into) needs - an HDMI switch. This will allow you to plug all sorts of goodies into one TV.  I am talking about such gadgets as as BluRay player, HD Cable Box or Tivo, PS3, XBox360, Satellite, etc.  Great for those times you just have HDMI overload.

Pros and Cons about Obama

I was just reading on Time.Com about Obama's Anti Rumor Plan - he has a whole new section of his web site entitled Fight The Smears where he is directly addressing some of the rumors that have been swirling around his candidacy.

One "Con" that does disturb me is that Obama has suggested that his  planned early education plan could be paid for by "delaying the NASA Constellation Program for five years."  I realize that budgets have to be balanced and that no program is going to get a blank check,  however, I  think we have let  NASA and the Space program languish  for too  long.  Many technological advanced come from these projects particularly in terms of  energy sources, fuels, sustainable agriculture,  and other  technologies that are topical to our current problems on earth.  If you are willing to throw NASA and the dream of space "under the bus" well...I can't support that.  Cut some war spending or something darn it.

Obama Bike pic

The man is a consummate politician and I am sure this photo opp has a lot to do with looking safe and suburban to ease the fears of those of the American public who might not feel ready for a President with his racial and ethnic background.  Well, if you were trying to look like a suburban Dad, you did it.

I say rock on to Mr. Obama riding his bike over the weekend.  Yeah he looks about as nerdy as anyone else wearing a bike helmet but safety first.
