Roger Ebert made his first public appearance since his cancer surgery last June. Let me quote from cnn.com.
In an e-mailed note to reporters and a column in the Chicago Sun-Times earlier this week, Ebert spoke frankly about his appearance, saying he had been warned by friends that showing up would invite both unflattering photos and unkind coverage.
"So what?" Ebert wrote. "I have been very sick, am getting better and this is how it looks."
He wrote that he now awaits another operation that he hopes will restore his speech.
I just want to say "hurray for you, Roger." There are so many people in this world going through all kinds of physical troubles. We don't always look perfect all the time. Sometimes life leaves us a little bit messed up. Its just the way it is. But to be alive, and recovering is what's important. What's important is to support those folks going through a rough time. And readers, remember when you are going through your own trials and tribulations that you are not alone. We all have our own battles to fight. For me its Crohn's disease. For my mom right now it's polymyalgia rheumatica.
Anyway I just wanted to say Roger, you look great! Keep working on your recovery and I look forward to seeing more of you. I hope they can restore your voice for you - that sounds like a really cool operation. Its so amazing the things that medical science can do.
