Believe it or not, I have not been back to New York City in more than 10 years. The last time I went was for a work trip when I worked for MetLife. I actually worked in the landmark Metife building for one day - that was pretty cool.
When I was a kid we spent tons of time in NYC every year. Spring vacations, summer vacations, Thanksgiving, all were times to pile into the car and make the 8 hour drive from Rochester to Long Island where my grandparents lived. Every trip to Long Island had to include a trip into "the City" to get some culture. We loved the Museum of Natural History, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MOMA (the Museum of Modern Art) no matter how many times we went.
One of the other wonderful experiences I remember is seeing the City Opera in the Park in Central Park. I was about 8 years old, eating lunch on a park bench nearby to where my grandparents and Cousin Gloria had their blanket laid out, and a lady sat down next to me. She asked me if I had ever seen an Opera before, and some other questions, and said she worked with the Opera. A little bit later my grandparents excitedly told me that I had just eaten lunch on a park bench with Beverly Sills. (The famous Opera singer, and director of the City Opera!)
