The sock method is from Cat Bordhi's new book "Personal Footprints for Insouciant Sock Knitters." It is a very creative way to make a sock. You basically knit a tube with two ends that are the tow and heel. Then you open up the tube and make the leg opening come out.
In this way you avoid short rows, picking up stitches, and the whole sock is knit in the round. You don't have to make a gauge swatch, there's no math, and you only have to keep track of rows during the toe and heel. Pretty snazzy.
